By Dr Sylvie Kleinman, Visiting Research Fellow (2017–2020) at the Department of History, Trinity College Dublin
The ‘fake news’ by which Daniel O’Connell, in his capacity as Lord Mayor of Dublin, was seemingly late for the Viceroy’s levée on 17 November 1841, sparked a media war branding it a ‘day of rare sport at Dublin Castle.’ But the episode allows us to explore hitherto-unexplored insights on how Ireland’s uncrowned monarch experienced some of the rituals and ceremonies of the ‘mock court’, in an age of shifting identity politics.
